Connect and start to configure the E-Series/BEAST
Hello everyone.
Welcome to this how to video with me. Richard Hornsby, I'm one of the systems engineers for Nexsan today we're going to be talking about connecting to the E series, or Beast, basically, just to get going, okay, just to connect you onto the GUI so you can start to configure the storage array.
So at Nexsan, we provide these quick start guides, and this is just a guide to help you rack and stack it and cable it and make sure everything is okay there. It also got some information on how to potentially add an expansion shelf and cable that up as well. But the thing that we're most interested in, in this case is this link here. Okay, so this downloads page.
Now, if we head to that downloads page, plenty of documentation as well that you can download, but also this the Windows install, and that's what we need to first connect to the storage or storage array. So I've already got that downloaded. There it is. Okay. Now it's not too complicated. It's just a classic Windows Installer. So for example, it would be next, next, next, and away you go.
But here I'm just going to cancel that and come out of that. Now, once that is installed, what that does give you is this IP configuration tool here. So let's go ahead and launch that. Now, what this does is it goes out and scans the network for any Nexsan kit. Okay, so here you can see it's found something. It's found an E 18 P storage array, and it's asking us, you know, do we want to configure it?
Well, yeah, we do. Of course we do. So I'm going to go ahead and say yes to that. Now what I've done here on my laptop is I've just created a very simple IP address on this Nick so I've just done a basic 192 168 address, 199 now my plan is to give the storage array the IP address of 2.2 100.
Okay, so just to show you how I've done that, and also, I've connected just a cat five cable into the laptop and into the back of the storage array. The E 18 into the management port, must be into the management port, okay. So once you've done that, you will see the storage array itself. But yeah, we do want to go ahead and change the IP address so we'll just go 19216, 8.1, dot, 200 we'll just give it a quick 255255255, default gateway, 192168, dot, 1.1, now the DNS you don't have to worry about that.
Now you can configure that later, okay, but we'll apply the changes. And what you see is it updates this URL, and that is basically just the connection into the GUI to start configuring it. So let's click on there. You'll be presented with the login screen.
Now at this point, we haven't configured any passwords, users, anything like that. So you're free just to go ahead and click on here to log in now, then it presents us with this end user license agreement. Now you, of course, you can read through that if you want to, but I'm just going to skip down to the bottom, put a little tick in the box and click on, agree. Right. Great.
So now, at this point, you are, I mean, you've pretty much done it really Okay, so you've connected to the storage array, and you can start to configure it. What I would tend to do is go ahead and change that security. So configure network security, and then, yeah, let's make this admin password required. I will go and set a quick password, just make sure, then if you log in, you'll be prompted as required. So let's set that admin pass password.
So now you can see you can navigate through the GUI, and it will prompt you for that admin password that you've just created, so hopefully with no typos. So there's the storage on a so you, I mean, that's, that's really it. So you've connected, you've gone on to the the E series, in this case, and you can start to configure it. So there's another top tip here was this Quick Start option where you can just add in some default values, you know, RAID six, and just click on Next, and just run through the wizard.
And what that will do is just create you a big rate system with as many volumes as you need, really nice and simple just to get you going. So that's pretty much it for this one, short and sweet, but it's just to give you a good idea of how easy it is to connect up to the storage array and get it configured. So hopefully you found that useful.
Thank you very much. Bye.
