Creating a LUN to present to a Windows server with Unity
Hello everyone, and welcome to a another video in the How To series that we're creating with Nexsan so I'll say hello. My name is Richard Hornsby, one of the systems engineer for Nexsan, and I'm joined today a special guest, Kevin Green, who's currently working as a storage consultant for us. And today it's nice and simple. We're just looking at creating a LUN to present to a Windows Server with Unity. So hopefully a fairly short video, but it's a good start. So what I'll do is I'll stop sharing Kevin, and then I'll hand over to you.
Okay, hi everybody. Hopefully you can see that screen, as Richard just mentioned, all we're going to do is create a LUN, but we're going to present it to a dedicated Windows Server. So the first step is actually under the System Tab. After you've logged into the Unity dashboard, go to host connectivity, drop the Lund mass tab down for initiator group. This means that we're going to actually create an initiate group that is dedicated to a specific Windows is because the IQ n, so add initiator group. We're going to give it a name. I'm going to call it Oka, one. Now we need to go and grab the IQ and so down here, this is the server that we're on. We're going to open the ice because the initiator under Configuration, copy the information, all of it from there, and place it into the bottom box, and click Add.
All we need to do now is click apply. If you don't do this bit first, and you create the lung first, you can't then add it to a specific initiator. It assigns to all. So it's just, it's just a quick way of doing it. So from here now we're going to create the
LUN.
So under Storage, we create Lun, add the LUN, give it a name.
I'm going to call it. I'll call one Lun, one block size, whatever is relevant to your actual setup. I'm going to choose 64k now I'm going to choose Next in the bottom right hand corner. I'm going to give it a size of one terabyte. We're going to leave it as thin provisioned. Obviously, you have a choice as whatever is required in your environment. We're going to choose next now snapshot ins we're going to talk about later in another video. So I'm going to disable those, but if you wanted to, you can actually activate the snapshots from here and schedule them. So I'm just going to turn them off for a second.
Do next. Now this is where I need to create a new land mask.
So I'm going to choose Next, give it a name.
I only want to give it to arco one. If I leave it as all house. That means any server that attaches to the ice, because the discovery port will see the LUN. We don't want that. I want it only going to I'll go one.
I choose next, and that's it.
All. The settings are labeled above.
Give them a check. If you need to go back, use the previous or we go for create.
It only takes a couple of minutes now, or a couple of seconds, really, to create the LUN and map everything through. And once it's complete, we can just check it over.
So that's the first bit on the Unity part done, is it? And then we just need to head over to the server and do the exactly disk management side there, don't we?
Yeah.
So what we'll do now is, from this point of view, we've got our LUN and we've got our initiator created and so on. We need to tell ice scuzzy on the server how to find it. So we're going to go to discovery, Discovery portal, and we're going to use the IP address of the ice because he discovery, which is 33 Click, OK. Now if I go back to targets, I can already see there's one there.
I hit connect. I'm not enabling multipath in in this case, I'm just going standard Click, OK. Now if I do right click on the Windows and go to Disk Management, in a few seconds, we should get a pop up disk eight.
Just wait for it to come up. Go to full screen at the bottom.
There we go. There's the one terabyte. So right click, New Simple Volume. I'm going to give it a name, and I always choose N, and I'm just going to put in there Nexsan. Choose Next and Finish.
We've now got an end drive on our server ready for whatever we want to use it for.
All done, simple, brilliant, nice, quick, simple, easy, that's fantastic. All right. Thank you very much, Kevin, hopefully you've guys found that useful. All and yeah join us again for maybe a next video.
