Security and Speed Top Barriers to a Truly Connected Workforce, Survey Reveals
Nearly One in Five Employees Consider Their Storage Inadequate for Collaborative Working
London, UK. 7 June 2016. A survey conducted by Nexsan™, a global leader in unified storage solutions, at Cloud Expo in London last month, revealed that data security and download speeds were the top two barriers to a truly connected workforce. The survey reveals that 98% of users need to work remotely or collaboratively, with nearly two thirds (61%) responding that they need to access company data on their own devices (BYOD).
Further findings reveal that:
76% are required to access work documents away from the office
73% work remotely
58% work from other offices within the business
36% need to share files outside of the business.
Whilst the majority of people (91%) felt they were permitted to access work files outside of the office, only 58% considered access to files away from the office to be “private and secure”. When it came to sharing files outside of the business only 3% believe file sharing to be private and secure.
22% of respondents said the main barrier to collaborative working was the length of time traditional storage or public cloud services take to download and upload work, with 18% believing that their storage was either inadequate for or hindering collaborative working.
Security was the second highest concern (17%) and a close third was concerns regarding version control (16%). Other barriers to a truly connected and mobile workforce were that companies did not have the facilities to file sync and share (FSS), FSS was too complicated, or remote access was prohibited entirely.
“The survey statistics reveal a picture of a workforce who need to access and share files remotely and across devices, yet who are being hindered by download speeds, lack of secure file sync and share facilities and storage systems that are too rigid,” said Geraldine Osman, VP International Marketing, Nexsan. “It is this struggle, this gap between what employees need and what their current storage systems can deliver, that led to the creation of Nexsan UNITY. With UNITY, the enterprise can have private and secure access to company data as well as integrated FSS for seamless collaboration and greater workforce productivity.“
Nexsan UNITY™ is a next-generation storage platform that combines the performance, scalability and value of DRAM and Flash along with private cloud file system synchronisation and true data mobility support. Delivering high-performance multi-site collaboration, UNITY exclusively offers enterprise n-Way Sync. The n-Way Sync functionality makes UNITY the only enterprise filer to deliver high performance unified storage with site-to-site enterprise synchronisation. Enterprise sync is supported across distributed primary storage at LAN access speeds, improving user productivity while leveraging an organisation’s secure infrastructure, including Active Directory to prevent unauthorised user file access. This assures that data is in sync across multiple sites and locations while securing content with encryption at rest and in flight with self-encrypting drives and encryption keys.
UNITY’s patented technology is designed to support all devices – from mobile devices to tablets, laptops and desktops, running Android, iOS, Mac and Windows– and provides a secure connection to data stored and managed within the enterprise, totally eliminating the drudgery of using unpopular and aging VPN technologies. Mobile workforces will have the freedom and flexibility to access and share files securely across all of their devices – no matter where they are – for enhanced business productivity and data security.
“Nexsan UNITY completely redefines the way traditional storage platforms have worked for decades, going far beyond just meeting the data storage requirements of the IT function,” Osman concluded. “For the first time an on premises storage platform empowers users by seamlessly connecting the entire workforce to information stored securely in the data center, in a way no other unified storage solution can do today.”
