Storage Networking World Honors CalTech as a "Best Practices in Storage" Award Finalist

CalTech Recognized for Achievements in Data Center Energy Efficiency Using Nexsan

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., April 14, 2010 -- Nexsan® a leading storage system provider, today announced that its customer, the California Institute of Technology, "CalTech," has been recognized by Storage Networking World (SNW) and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) as a finalist in its "Best Practices" Awards Program in the "Green Computing, Energy Efficiency and the Data Center" category.

The SNW "Best Practices" award category of Green Computing, Energy Efficiency and the Data Center recognizes achievements in deploying greener IT footprints, data centers, servers and/or storage environments. Those that are honored are chosen for their implementations of environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient computing scenarios.

CalTech is the operational home for the Spitzer Science Center which performs research and data collection for the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope mission. To reliably store the Spitzer images and associated research, CalTech has deployed Nexsan disk-based storage systems to retain over 2 PB of Spitzer Space Telescope images on 2,000 drives, 130 controllers and 65 chassis. One of the keys to lowering overall operational costs for CalTech is Nexsan’s revolutionary AutoMAID® (Automatic Massive Array of Independent Disks) energy-saving technology. AutoMAID enables CalTech to determine the level of access speed and energy savings they desire to meet computing objectives while maintaining a more efficient datacenter environment. As a result, CalTech saves up to 70% in data storage power requirements without impacting storage performance.

"The SNW ‘Best Practices’ award is a well respected distinction and we are pleased to have one of our customers recognized as a finalist," said Bob Woolery, senior vice president of marketing for Nexsan. "We are honored that CalTech has been chosen for its innovative storage deployment and view it as a true testament to the energy efficiency of our AutoMAID technology."

A wide range of IT end-user companies and organizations responded to an initial "call for nominations," which was originally announced to multiple industry audiences, including Computerworld subscribers responsible for storage networking solutions. Finalists were evaluated by a panel of judges based on case study submissions that profiled the company, its IT department and storage networking challenges, as well as application deployment details, summaries of the key technology used and measurable solution outcomes.
